Cost is usually the second question parents ask us, right after whether their child will enjoy it.
The short answer is that most Canberra schools land somewhere between thirty-five and sixty dollars a week, depending on the program and how they structure it. Some publish that figure on their website. Others quote in person. Both are normal.
That range is wide enough to be almost useless on its own, which is the real problem with the question. Two schools charging the same amount can be selling completely different things, and the gap only shows up months later when one child has learned something and the other has spent a year running around a hall.

Start with the instructor, not the invoice
Ask who is actually teaching your child, and where their skill came from.
What grade do they hold, and who graded them. Who taught them, and who taught that person. Every legitimate martial arts lineage traces back somewhere, and an instructor who has trained seriously will answer without hesitating. Vagueness here tells you what you need to know.
Then ask how long they have been teaching, as opposed to how long they have been training. Those are different skills. Plenty of capable martial artists are poor teachers of six year olds.

How long has the school been running
A school that has operated in Canberra for twenty years has survived something. Families kept enrolling, instructors kept turning up, and the doors stayed open when running a small local business got genuinely hard. Plenty of Canberra schools did not come out the other side of 2020 and 2021.
Longevity on its own is not the whole answer though. Ask whether the school depends on one person. If a single instructor holds the whole thing together, your child's training stops when that person is sick, on holiday, or moves on. A school with a bench of qualified instructors keeps running.
Count the black belts too, particularly the senior ones. A school with adults who graded there ten or fifteen years ago and still train is showing you something no marketing can fake. People do not stay that long at a place that is coasting.
Read the reviews properly
Google reviews are the easiest check available and most parents skim them.
Look at volume first, because a handful of five star reviews means little. Then read what parents say happened rather than how they felt. A review describing a shy child who now speaks up in class tells you more than one calling the school amazing. Check the dates as well. Reviews clustered around one month usually mean someone ran a campaign. Ours are collected on our reviews page if you want to see what that looks like in practice.
The question underneath the cost question
Here is what most parents are actually asking when they ask about price. Will my child learn something that lasts, or is this a belt factory.
Both exist in Canberra. A good school teaches self defence properly, and uses it to build confidence, focus, listening and discipline. A child who has to stand still and wait before being taught is learning something. So is one who fails a grading and re-sits it three months later.
The other kind runs on entertainment. Movie nights, Nerf wars, birthday parties, belts every eight weeks whether or not anything was learned. None of that is bad in itself and children enjoy it. It is just worth knowing whether you are paying for personal development or for after school care with a uniform.
The test is simple. Ask what a child has to demonstrate to earn their next belt, and whether anyone ever fails. If nobody fails, the belt means nothing, and your child will work out that it means nothing.
What to ask before you enrol
The training fees are rarely the whole picture. Ask about these before signing anything.
Uniform, and whether a second one becomes necessary as your child grows
Grading fees, and how often gradings happen
Registration or association membership, usually annual
Sparring gear, and at what stage it becomes required
Competitions and events, and whether they are optional
Family rates, if you are enrolling more than one child
A school that answers all six without hesitation is telling you something useful. So is one that does not.
Value shows up in retention
A slightly more expensive class your child attends for three years costs less per session than a cheap one they quit after a term.
Ask how long the average student stays. Ask how many reach black belt, and how long that takes. A school that cannot answer either question has not been paying attention to the thing that matters most.
