Canberra has dozens of schools and a lot of conflicting advice. This guide covers the main styles, which ages they suit, and what to check before you enrol anywhere.
Every style you have heard of fits one of these three patterns. Knowing which is which makes the choice much easier.
Kicks, punches and distance
Striking arts teach you to hit, defend and control the space between you and another person. Taekwondo, karate, muay thai and kickboxing sit here. They build fitness and coordination, and most people can start with no background at all.
Control on the ground
Grappling arts use leverage instead of strikes to throw, control and submit an opponent. Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo and wrestling belong to this group. Training involves sustained close contact, which suits some people and puts others off.
Both, in one program
Mixed martial arts blends striking and grappling. It is competitive, demanding on the body, and better suited to adults with time to train several days a week.
Age shapes the choice more than style does. Here is what each age bracket typically looks like in a Canberra dojang or dojo.
4
Focus on basic coordination, listening and following instructions. Sessions are short and structured. Taekwondo, karate and kids' judo all run programs for this age.
5–11
The strongest years for building discipline, structure and skill. Traditional martial arts fit well here. Choose based on the school you can get to consistently.
12–17
Confidence years. Teenagers benefit from training alongside adults in a structured environment. Any style works if the school takes teenagers seriously.
18+
You can start any style at any age. Pick something you can maintain twice a week. Consistency beats intensity every time.
Taekwondo is a Korean striking art built on kicks, hand techniques, patterns and self defence. Belts run from white to black, and progression is quarterly. It suits children who need structure, teenagers building confidence, and adults who want a lifelong practice. We have taught it in Canberra for over 35 years.
Style matters less than the school. These four things separate a school worth staying at from one you will leave in six months.
Who is teaching you
Qualifications matter. Ask about grade, teaching experience, and whether the head instructor is present at your class.
How progress is measured
A clear belt or level system tells you what you are working towards. Regular gradings keep training focused.
How they teach contact
Contact is introduced in stages. A good school matches partner work to your experience and never puts a beginner into something they are not ready for.
What ongoing training looks like
Ask about frequency, fees, uniform, and grading costs. Get the full picture so you understand what your commitment looks like.
Some schools set you up to keep training for years. Others burn through beginners. The difference shows up before your first grading.
WEAKER SCHOOLS
Unclear instructor credentials
You cannot verify who is teaching or what they hold.
Paid trials, or none at all
Some schools charge for a first class. Others ask you to sign up before you have seen the room.
Costs revealed piece by piece
You learn about uniforms, gradings and events one at a time, after you have committed.

The child matters more than the style. Children who need structure and clear milestones do well in Taekwondo or karate. Physical children who enjoy wrestling often prefer judo or jiu jitsu. Book a trial class, because most children know within one session whether they want to return.
Around four, in programs designed for that age specifically. Below four, most children are not ready for structured classes. From five the choice opens up, and most Canberra schools run dedicated children's programs from that age.
Neither. Taekwondo emphasises kicking and mobility. Karate emphasises hand techniques and close range. Both teach discipline, both run belt progressions, and both suit children and adults. The school and the instructor make more difference to your experience than the style does.
Fees vary by school, style and training frequency. Most Canberra schools charge weekly, monthly or by term, and some add uniform and grading fees. We go through pricing at your trial class so you see the full cost before you decide anything.
No. Most adults who start are not fit, and classes let you work at your own level. Training builds the fitness. Turning up is the only prerequisite.
Yes. Adults begin in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond. Progress looks different at different ages, but the path is the same, and adult beginners are common enough that nobody will notice you are new.
