Your first class

What toexpect.

No surprises. Here's exactly what happens at your first Tae Kwon-Do class. From walking in to walking out.

Step by step

Your first class,minute by minute

01

Arrive a few minutes early

Come 10 minutes before class starts. Your instructor will introduce themselves and give you a quick walkthrough of the venue. You'll leave your shoes near the door. Bare feet on the training floor is tradition.

Tip: wear tracksuit pants and a t-shirt. No need for a uniform at a trial.

02

Warm-up with the group

Classes start with a structured warm-up: light stretching, strengthening and movement drills. This eases everyone in and signals the start of training time. Kids love this part because it feels like games.

Don't worry if you can't do everything perfectly. Nobody expects you to.

03

Learn your first techniques

Your instructor will teach you a handful of foundational techniques: a basic stance, a block, and a strike. You'll drill these in a controlled way. There's no contact with other students in your first class.

It's normal to feel awkward at first. Every black belt felt exactly the same.

04

Cool-down and reflection

Classes end with a cool-down, a formal bow, and a short debrief. You'll hear what the class worked on and what to focus on next time. Students leave knowing what they achieved. That matters.

Children often leave buzzing. Adults sometimes leave surprised at how much they enjoyed it.

05

Chat with the instructor

After class you'll have a few minutes to ask questions. Your instructor will talk through programs, schedules and next steps. There's no pressure. This is just information to help you decide if it's right for you.

Bring any questions you have. There are no silly questions in a first class conversation.

The transformation

Before & after your first class

Before you arrive
  • Nervous, unsure what to expect
  • Wondering if you're fit enough
  • Not sure if your child will enjoy it
  • Thinking you're too old / too shy to start
  • Unsure about the cost and commitment
After your first class
  • You know exactly what's involved. No mysteries
  • You've had a taste of real technique training
  • Your child (usually) wants to come back immediately
  • You've met the instructor and asked your questions
  • You can make an informed decision
Common worries

We've heard these before.

I'm not fit enough.
Tae Kwon-Do builds your fitness. You don't need to be fit to start. You build fitness through training.
I'm too old.
We have students who started in their 50s and 60s. Tae Kwon-Do is about skill, not strength or age.
My child is shy / has anxiety.
Many of our most confident students started as the shyest kids in the room. Progress is gradual and real.
It looks violent.
In the early belts there is no sparring contact. The focus is on discipline, technique and self-control. The opposite of violence.
I'll embarrass myself.
Everyone is a beginner once. The training floor has a culture of respect. Nobody laughs at mistakes. Mistakes are how you improve.
For parents

What parents need to know

First sessions, you stay

You're welcome to watch for the first one or two classes. Most children settle quickly once they're comfortable with the instructor and the routine.

Your questions get answered

After class your instructor will walk you through the programs, schedules and next steps. Bring any questions you have.

Bring water

A water bottle is all you need. We have a water refill station at Mitchell HQ.

Instant confirmation

You'll get a confirmation SMS with the venue address, parking and class time.
